Significance of U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology for mudstone provenance

چکیده

Abstract Detrital zircon U-Pb studies of mudstone provenance are rare but may preferentially fingerprint distal sources. To examine this issue, Pierre Shale and Trinidad Sandstone deposited in a Late Cretaceous deltaic environment the Raton Basin, Colorado (USA), were measured for detrital age by laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry. Two major peaks at ca. 70 1690 Ma found both inversely varying proportions: 68% 16%, respectively, finest fraction (~15–35 ?m) shale, 25% 32%, coarsest (~60–80 sandstone. Proximal sources Sangre de Cristo Mountains, directly west contain coarse-grained, zircon, whereas Laramide uplifts basins Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona fine-grained, zircon. The results indicate that reflects availability volcanic other fine-grained source rocks rather than simply should routinely include units because these identify more reliably sandstones alone.

DETRITAL ZIRCON U/Pb AGE DETERMINATION: UNDERSTANDING THE PROVENANCE OF THE LATE- CRETACEOUS SHUMAGIN FORMATION, ALASKA

The Chugach-Prince William (CPW) terrane is an Upper Cretaceous to Eocene accretionary complex exposed for ~2200 km in southern Alaska, extending from Baranof Island in the east to Sanak Island in the west. One of the thickest subduction-related accretionary complexes in the world, the CPW terrane is composed of deep-water flysch and associated volcanic rocks and is intruded by near-trench plut...

Detrital zircon provenance and Ordovician terrane amalgamation,

East-derived sandstones contain a 23 suite of zircons with a mean age of ca 487 Ma that suggests derivation fr...

Zircon U-Pb geochronology of the Ottawan Orogeny, Adirondack Highlands, New York: regional and tectonic implications

Both single and multigrain U-Pb zircon thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) as well as sensitive high resolution ion microprobe (SHRIMP ll) dating of two suites of Adirondack granites have yielded ages constraining the principal tectonomagmatic events of the Ottawan Orogeny to the interval ca 1090–1035 Ma. The earliest of these consists of mildly A-type hornblende granites of the Hawkeye...

Chemical Abrasion Applied to LA-ICP-MS U–Pb Zircon Geochronology

Zircon (ZrSiO4) is the most commonly used mineral in U–Pb geochronology. Although it has proven to be a robust chronometer, it can suffer from Pb-loss or elevated common Pb, both of which impede precision and accuracy of age determinations. Chemical abrasion of zircon involves thermal annealing followed by relatively low temperature partial dissolution in HF acid. It was specifically developed ...

Controls on erosion intensity in the Yangtze River basin tracked by U–Pb detrital zircon dating

a r t i c l e i n f o The Yangtze River dominates the drainage of eastern Asia, yet the processes that control erosion within the basin are obscure, making the interpretation of the detritus record difficult. In this study we used U–Pb dating of zircon grains from the modern main stream and major tributaries to identify the sources of sediment production, based on the diversity of zircon ages a...
